A Letter From the Past

Before Christmas 2007, my mother texted me to say that I had a letter waiting at her house. I was heading over anyway to help her get the house ready for guests. It turned out to be a short letter with a picture of a cute, smiling baby girl. From a girl that I had shared a hotel room for a week in Washington D.C. in 1993 and kept in touch through letters. We recounciled briefly as students at California State University Northridge, in I think, 1998. Our lives didn’t keep us in constant contact, and we usually kept in touch through snail mail. And I moved a lot. To New York, back to California, three different home addresses before this one. I’m terrible at letting everyone know where we are.

Today I finally sat down to write a reply on a Christmas card, nonetheless. I know it’s April and not the holiday seasons but I figure since she sent one during the holidays, I might as well send a reply on a card.

It’s funny when people suddenly reach out of the past to reconnect with you after you think they’ve forgotten about you. I’m notorious about dropping out of contact for extended periods of time. Very few things in my life are actually fixed points. Heck, I don’t really have a routine that I follow on a daily basis other than my job’s hours. It probably has made some people near me frustrated.

Apparently my penpal friend is now married and mother to a toddler daughter and is living in Los Angeles, of all places. The one place I swore I’d never go back to. It’s an unpretty place.

I think she’s doing well. Her letter was very brief, I think because she wasn’t sure if I would get it.

I think that is a really nice story. I wish that I knew where one of my best friends from jr. high is right now. It’s been ages since I’ve seen her.
